Diabetes – a problem? who’d have thought.

One of those (very few) occasions that I regret being right.

Those of you who remember me 15 years ago, lecturing at the Raworth Centre, may recall how I was bleating on about you as trainee therapists, who in a decade or so would be facing Diabetes at epidemic proportions.  The overweight kids you saw on their way to school, who would be diabetic teens.  We have arrived.

3 million and counting, with 600k undiagnosed.  25% of hospital beds occupied by those with Diabetes-related complications.  10% of the NHS budget per year.  A 60% increase in Diabetes type 2 over the past 10 years.

Do we need more stats to recognise that food and diet need to be taught in schools and that sugar needs to be taxed to pay for the mess.  Yes, people choose to put the sugar in their mouths and type 2 is life-style based, but there needs to be education for those young enough to be innocent in the process, yet caught in the food product manufacturer’s trap.

We need strong Government. Those who have the backbone to stand up to lobbies, rather than look to their consultancies post-office.  A Government that has a principle, a long term view and the conviction to make it happen.  Forget the playground bickering of the self-serving toddlers in Westminster, I wonder if we could ask the Swedes to take on the UK as a sub-contract.
