A sweeping generalisation perhaps, but if in doubt, ask your MP what they have done in the past year to address the amount of sugar in food sold in the UK. MPs may care about their children’s health, or your children’s health (in theory), but not enough to stand up to the sugar lobby or actually do anything. I don’t mind what people think of him, but Jamie Oliver has been talking straight sense about healthy food for this nation’s children for over ten years and he has been studiously ignored by all politicians. Wonder why? Jamie has a massive publicity impact and doesn’t even need to campaign on this, but it really matters to him. Yet, despite his clout, parliament ignores him.
To what extent the sugar lobby and big food manufacturers own their pet politicians (of all parties) is unknown. MPs have ensured that lobbying business and funding is kept secret and now they wish to place a purchase price on Freedom of Information. Such deterrents to hide their financial dealings will only serve the belief that they are doing something which is their interest and not in ours. Only openness will dispel that belief. They do forget that they are public servants, as does anyone who inhabits an ivory tower that they don’t pay for. So ultimately, we know that your MP will wring their hands and talk about Diabetes in the young and heart disease and the cost to the NHS. Their solution? from the team who say they are “prepared to make difficult decisions” a quote their from offshore trust fund kiddie, Gideon Osborne. We know they won’t have the guts to stand up to big food producers and sugar. They won’t reintroduce domestic science to teach children about good food and health They won’t require doctors to understand nutrition as part of their training and They won’t address sugar in food, despite the cost to the nation’s health. They will ignore the deeply committed Jamie Oliver – yet again. Because, they don’t quite care enough about your children’s health. As ever, my comments are non party political. I do rate and like my MP, even though he doesn’t do anything about this either. His office will get a copy of this. Whatever you think of Jamie O, he cares. It’s not the fault of doctors that they know nothing about nutrition. They are taught nothing about it. My comments are also an opinion based on the situation as I understand it. If anyone knows better, feel free to put me straight. Ask the questions, many questions and keep asking. All the best, Declan http://www.jamieoliver.com/sugar-rush/
